Adrian Newey is hands down the greatest car designer in the history of Formula 1. Since taking up the role of a chief designer in 1987, Newey has contributed to an impressive 12 Constructors’ Championships and 13 Driver’s Championships, including Max Verstappen‘s 2023 title. It was the most dominant season in F1’s history, with Red Bull having a win percentage of 95.5. So the fact that Newey’s future at Red Bull remains uncertain is shocking, to say the least.

While Newey has recently acknowledged that he still loves to take on the challenge of Formula 1, he has not yet made up his mind to continue with Red Bull. He has received attractive offers from teams like Ferrari and Aston Martin and he would soon have to decide whether to renew his Red Bull contract or not. But what could be causing him to even think about leaving a team where he has been for almost 20 years? It turns out that his relationship with team boss Christian Horner has reportedly been soured, and interestingly, Newey’s wife, Amanda Newey, could also play a role in Newey’s upcoming decision.

However, the supposed internal power struggle at Red Bull following Christian Horner’s abuse of power episode isn’t the only reason for the rift between Horner and Newey. It turns out that Adrian Newey’s wife, Amanda, is also extremely upset with the British team boss. Reportedly, Horner denied Amanda a paddock pass for a race last season. And to make things worse, he later commented, in Amanda’s presence, that Newey was not the only reason for Red Bull’s recent success.

According to a report from sport1.de, it turns out that Amanda wants Adrian Newey to leave Red Bull and take on the project he has dreamed about since 2014. She recently liked a post on X about Newey’s regret to not have worked with Ferrari, for Fernando Alonso, or even for Lewis Hamilton. The post simply read, Now’s your chance to tick off those regrets, Adrian.” [Translated by Google]

It’s not just Newey, but Max Verstappen has also been rumored to leave Red Bull at the end of 2024 following the unrest between Christian Horner and the Verstappen camp which includes Max, his father Jos, and Helmut Marko. Can Verstappen’s decision also have an impact on where Newey ends up?

Former Ferrari boss sheds light on the Max Verstappen-Adrian Newey situation

The supposed internal power struggle at Red Bull that started with differences between the Austrian and Thai side of the energy drink giant can end up costing the team their star driver, Max Verstappen, along with their star designer. Many believe that the rift between Horner and Newey would mean that Newey would follow Verstappen if he decided to leave Red Bull.

However, Peter Windsor, former Ferrari manager, recently gave clarity about the real situation between Verstappen and Newey. He thinks that instead of Newey being dependent on the Dutchman, it’s the other way around. He told on the Cameron F1 podcast, “Well, I think the premise of everything being based around Max is wrong. I think everything is based around Adrian Newey. And Max will make a decision based on whether Adrian Newey stays at Red Bull or maybe goes somewhere else, which I don’t think he will. And I think he will stay at Red Bull so I think Max will stay at Red Bull.”
