Alpine has been at the center of attention for the last month or so. While they would have loved to do so because of their performance on the racetrack, that is so not the case. The latest change in the management is the axing of their now-ex-Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer. And Fernando Alonso, who worked with Szafnauer, has exposed the team’s shameful antics. And he’s dragged Oscar Piastri into the conversation as well.

In mid-2022, Alonso announced that he would be leaving Alpine. And the Enstone outfit announced that their junior driver, Piastri would replace him. But it came as a shock for everybody when the Australian rookie tweeted that this decision had been made without his consent and that he would not be joining Alpine. And now, bringing back that incident, Alonso has pointed out how both of them were shown in a bad light.

On BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast, Alonso said, “You need to sell the story. You need to tell which ones are the good ones and the bad ones. Because they have more power, Piastri and myself were the bad ones that we were just playing on the 1st August. I was moving to Aston Martin and Piastri was answering the tweet of the announcement. This is part of the job as well, in every race, every session, there are good guys and bad guys and the media always put me on the bad side.”

Alonso not only spoke about the media but also about Szafnauer giving him the cold shoulder in 2022.

In 2022, Alpine had a very good car. It was quicker than their 2021 car and they were scoring good points. And because of that, the 2-time champion wanted to renew his contract with the team for the coming years. But according to him, Otmar Szafnauer delayed talks for a long time. And the Spaniard had no choice but to leave.

“I don’t think I felt disrespected, but it is true it took longer than I thought when we started conversations,” said Alonso. “I think it was in Australia back in [April] 2022 about renewing the contract. It was just on a very slow pace, and it was not from my side. I was just ready and happy. The 2022 car was a fast car so I was also happy with the performance and the possibilities into the future. It is the way they do things or the way Otmar does things.”
