Surer, having himself come close to joining the Italian team in the past, acknowledged that while Hamilton would undoubtedly be a valuable asset for Ferrari, the current state of the team doesn’t make it a substantial career advancement for the British driver.

A pivotal factor influencing Hamilton’s decision to stay with Mercedes is his newfound comfort with the car. The upgrades introduced during the Monaco Grand Prix, including a new floor, front suspension, and sidepods, dramatically transformed Hamilton’s performance. Having expressed dissatisfaction with the car’s handling throughout the season, he finally found solace in Monaco. This newfound comfort not only signaled a potential upswing for Mercedes but also bolstered Hamilton’s belief in the team’s ability to regain their winning form.

During contract negotiations, rumors surfaced regarding Hamilton’s potential departure from Mercedes for Ferrari. Toto Wolff, the team boss, suspects these rumors were deliberately planted to destabilize Mercedes. He firmly believes that given the advanced stage of discussions he had with Hamilton, these rumors were mere attempts to sway the negotiation process. “Someone just placed that [story] maybe to, in a way, play a role in what seemed to be a negotiation,” he said in Monte Carlo as quoted by Fox Sports. In reality, the negotiations centered around refining the contract to suit both parties’ needs, rather than exploring alternative options.

Wolff’s unwavering trust in Hamilton is evident, as they had an agreement not to employ third parties as leverage during negotiations. “We have a pact, and we‘ve had that since many, many years, that we wouldn’t talk to any other driver before we have taken a decision to stay together or not, so I was never a millimetre in doubt that there were any discussions. There‘s nothing behind it,” he added. This commitment to maintaining open and direct communication reinforces Wolff’s confidence that the rumors hold no truth. Consequently, he remains optimistic that a new contract with Hamilton will be signed soon.
