F1 race director Michael Masi has issued a strong statement before the upcoming Abu Dhabi GP. The two championship protagonists are on equal points after 21 rounds this season, but Max Verstappen stands at the top because he has nine wins to Hamilton’s eight. The inference one can draw is that Max will take home the trophy if both these drivers do not finish in the Yas Marina Circuit on the coming weekend.

This sparked a conversation among F1 pundits if the Dutchman would want to act nasty on the track in order to take Lewis out of the race. However, in a recent development, Masi has warned both drivers of the consequences in any such scenario. He has made it clear that any attempt of a deliberate crash will cost them the title itself.

Masi warns that there are F1 regulations in place

The two drivers have been professional throughout the season and FIA race director Masi expects the same in Abu Dhabi. He said that the championship will hopefully be decided on the track and not in the stewards’ room.

“I can’t control the actions of the two individuals, only they can. But within the regulations we have penalties, be it time or grid penalties,” said Masi as reported by PlanetF1.

“In addition, the International Sporting Code has provision for the stewards to disqualify a competitor or dock championship points. So, yes, Max could be deducted points, as could any team. We hope it isn’t necessary, but it is one of the tools available. I will remind all the teams and drivers of these provisions,” he added.
