Despite being Mercedes’ saving grace in 2022, even George Russell isn’t ready to do the same dance in 2023. The W13 had its shortcoming. However, Mercedes wasn’t prepared for a similar outing in 2023. Although, as things stand, they have no reply to the staggering pace of the Red Bulls. This is exactly why the young Brit made a suggestion for the fans looking for excitement amidst this Red Bull domination.

While speaking to the media, as quoted by F1 Maximaal, Russell addressed the issue of the unbalanced 2023 grid. An ideal scenario would be a balanced grid where team trade wins every other race weekend. However, the current state of the grid is anything but ideal. This is exactly why Russell suggested an alternate viewing angle for the fans while being extremely honest about his team’s expectations.

“I think the competition we have at the moment is between Ferrari and Aston Martin,” said the 25-year-old. “Every race we go to, it’s very close between us in qualifying. We are also close in the race.” (Translated by Google)

“If that was the battle for the win, it would probably be one of the most exciting seasons we’ve seen in a long, long time. And of course, it’s just a pity that there are still two cars far in front. So yes, forget those two and just watch the race for P3,” suggested the Mercedes man.

Russell said, “I think as a driver, you know the risks when you’re on the outside here. I’m here to fight, I’m here to win. I’m not going to hold back just because he’s leading the Championship… None of the contact was intentional.”

The Brit isn’t backing away from a fight. However, given Red Bull’s current superiority, there isn’t much Russell can do. A fight for P3 is the only realistic option for the Brackley outfit which they hope changes after Imola.
