In 2020, Scuderia Ferrari is in danger of registering its worst season in its history in the sport. The Maranello squad is currently lying fifth in the Constructors’ Championship standings. The last time they were in a somewhat predicament was during the 1981 F1 season.

One of the primary criticisms revolves around Team Principal, Mattia Binotto. The former engineer succeeded Maurizio Arrivabene last season, but some have wondered if he was the right man to lead Ferrari.

In light of this, former F1 driver Nick Heidfeld spoke to Bild in an interview about the situation. According to him, Binotto has yet to prove his mettle at the head of the Italian marquee.

The team’s demands are huge and lofty, but there are several things lacking. This centers around performance, image and handling Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel.

Heidfeld said, “The more important and more difficult question is who would be the right person now. Perhaps an external top man would be needed who would be open, unencumbered and without any connections in the team.”

Ever since Jean Todt left the team, Ferrari has gone through a number of racing directors. The team won the 2007 title under Todt’s guidance, but have turned up nothing since then.

Later on, Stefano Domenicali, Marco Mattiacci, Arrivabene, and Binotto all had stints to bring back the glory days. Now, Vettel is set to depart from Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season, after nearly six fruitless years.
