The F1 driver market has been shaken up ever since Sebastian Vettel announce his Ferrari departure from 2021. So, Ferrari recruited Carlos Sainz Jr and McLaren roped in Daniel Ricciardo. This leaves Renault on the lurch, with people doubting that Vettel will head to Renault. Interestingly, one name has popped up among the potential candidates, a certain Fernando Alonso may decide to have a second crack at F1.
Renault still harbour fond memories of Fernando Alonso since he delivered two back-to-back world championships. The man from Oviedo already had a second Renault stint in 2008-2009 after a tumultuous year with McLaren in 2007.
When he stepped away from Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season, Alonso insisted that this won’t be the last of him. In fact, he is keeping a keen eye on the 2021 technical revolution hoping to make a comeback with a competitive team. In this way, he could gun for a third F1 world championship.

Will Renault gamble on bringing back Fernando Alonso?
Admittedly, time is not on Alonso’s side, because he will be 40-years old next year. There is also a massive unknown of how he will get along with a young driver like Esteban Ocon. However, he is undoubtedly the most enticing option to present to the Renault board of directors to justify their investments.
In early May, the Spaniard confided during a live Instagram chat that his 2021 plans will be revealed soon. Given the rapid chain of announcements on the F1 transfer market, could Renault actually entertain the thought of bringing back Fernando Alonso?

The Spaniard arguably has a ‘disruptive presence’ and chances are that he could demand attention and leave Ocon as his wingman. Whether Ocon will want to settle into that role willingly, is another story. The team may also want to focus on their young starlet and develop him into a future champion.
