George Russell Snapped Back to Reality After Scary Lewis Hamilton Warning Gets Served Amid Mercedes’ Slug Fest

The last time Lewis Hamilton won a race was in 2021. That was also the year when he came closest to winning the coveted 8th world championship title. However, owing to a decision from race director Michael Masi, that was later adjudged as a human error by the FIA, the Briton missed out. Since then, Mercedes failed to make a competitive enough car with which he struggled more than his teammate George Russell. Now, a former Red Bull driver has warned Russell about Hamilton’s possible resurgence, citing his past exploits.
2022 was perhaps the worst year Hamilton has had since his arrival in F1. As Mercedes struggled to cope with the ground-effect regulations, he went a full season without a race win for a full season. That was the first time it has ever happened to him. All this while, Russell bagged his maiden race win while also beating Hamilton on points in his first season with Mercedes.

Despite Mercedes’ continued struggle, Hamilton has started to get a hold of the W14. He managed a P2 finish in Melbourne against all odds and is currently 2 places above his teammate in the standings with a difference of 16 points. Moreover, he heroically finished P6 in Miami despite starting the race from P13. Perhaps this is the reason for David Coulthard praising Hamilton.
Speaking with Channel 4 recently, Coulthard said, “George is just sort of constantly there. This is the best car he’s ever driven, so he’s not caught up with the baggage of Lewis trying to figure it out, ‘am I re-signing for another year?’ ‘Can I win another World Championship?’ So there’s a lot more on his plate.”

“George is doing a brilliant job, [he is an] absolute asset for the team. That’s not to say Lewis isn’t doing a brilliant job, it just means that the car isn’t talking to him right now and when it does, expect him to be showing George why he won seven World Championships.“
Hamilton’s overtakes in Miami gave glimpses of his old self. The one on Charles Leclerc also hinted that the Silver Arrows may not be slower than Ferrari as the results in Baku suggested.
Lewis Hamilton tells why he enjoyed the Miami GP despite a meager P6 finish
Mercedes strategists blundered big time during qualifying on Saturday. They waited too long to send Hamilton out for a flying lap in Q2 and that robbed him of a chance to make it to Q3. Resultantly, he started the race in P13 but a series of gutsy yet smooth overtakes saw him finish in P6.

Motorsport.com quoted Hamilton as saying post-race, “It was mega, just to be in a position [to overtake]. In the sprint race and the last race, I was going backwards and it is demoralizing when you are going backwards.”
“But it was great to have pace, to be seeing the cars up ahead and seeing the progress and knowing that we’re going to be battling with people. We had a couple of great overtakes as well, that is what I live for.”
