Greed alters our sense of priorities. Lewis Hamilton is all for diversity and has expressed his dream to add another continent to the F1 race calendar. Although Max Verstappen and Lewis don’t see eye to eye in many cases, recently the Dutch driver has joined The Briton’s dream. However, the dream was shattered after the greedy government changed the quotations last minute. 

Africa will complete 30 years since it last appeared on the F1 calendar back in 1993. Former World Champion Jody Scheckter’s Nephew Warren had been working on the deal for the better part of six years to bring F1 back to Africa. The deal fell through when the quotation went up from $500,000 to 2 Million dollars when F1 arrived to sign. Last year Lewis, and this year Max, both have been vocal about the absence of a Grand Prix in the African Continent. 

As per mirror.co.uk, Last year Hamilton said “The place that I really feel, to my heart, is most important to me is to get a race back in South Africa. I think there is a great following out there and I think it would be great to highlight how beautiful the motherland is.”, this year Verstappen said “I really think we need a race in Africa. We basically race on every other continent already, so I think that’s the next step for Formula 1. Formula 1 already has a history in South Africa, so that would be a great addition to the Formula 1 calendar.”

It really is a shame how the deal fell through because of greed. However, there are tracks that F1 can consider if they want to make a return to Africa. The Durban street circuit in South Africa hosted the hosted A1 Grand Prix for 2 years. The Ain Diab Circuit in Morocco and Circuit de Dakar Baobabs in Senegal to name a few. These circuits can be renovated to FIA grade 1 in case F1 signs a deal.

Is there any hope for F1 to return to Africa in the future?

Following the demise of the deal with the South African government, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stated that Africa will be back on the calendar and that there are other places in Africa as well where a Grand Prix can be held. F1 will make sure that in the future whenever It signs a new deal, it’s with fundamentally stable and right partners.

As per mirror.co.uk Stefano Domenicali said “The only thing that I can say that after the first contact with Kyalami is that there are other places in Africa that are interested on Formula 1. That’s a very clear target – Africa will come back and hopefully very soon on our calendar.”
