Every sport has a GOAT debate. Soccer has Ronaldo Vs Messi, and we have Nadal Vs Federer in Tennis. Similarly, Formula 1 has Hamilton Vs Schumacher. Lewis Hamilton has himself admitted in the past that Michael Schumacher is the GOAT, especially with one aspect of racing. Now, if we are to take Hamilton’s comments from the past to heart, he has already surpassed the German.

Back in 2018, Hamilton won his fifth driver’s championship in Mexico after finishing fourth in the race. Hamilton won the championship with two races to spare. However, the Brit wasn’t going to settle with five championships and 71 race wins until the 2018 Mexican GP. Therefore, when Hamilton admitted, Michael Schumacher is the GOAT because of his 91 race wins record, we had to reignite the debate.

In 2018, he said, “I’ve still got things to achieve. There are so many targets, so many things ahead. Michael’s still quite far ahead in race wins, so you have to say he is still the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). Michael was just such a genius in how he implemented himself into Ferrari and what he did with that team. I will always be a fan of him.”

“Whether or not I’m going to have the chance to win more, who knows?” added Hamilton. Well, as we all know, the Mercedes man got a lot of opportunities and he is already at 103 career race wins.

Does this make him the GOAT? Or will he have to win the eighth championship to claim the title undisputedly? If Hamilton wins the eighth championship title, will he retire?

While these questions are up for debate, we can give you the answer to the last question with some certainty.

Lewis Hamilton talks about retirement if he wins the eighth championship title

Hamilton came within touching distance of the elusive eighth championship title in 2021. However, the Brit fell far from it in the following year. Will 2023 be the year? All signs point otherwise. However, even if it is Hamilton’s year in 2023, he is far from retiring.

When asked about retirement in relation to the eighth championship, Hamilton said, “I still feel fresh and I still feel young, to be honest, even though I’m around all these youngsters here. I don’t think that’s going to be the deciding factor of whether I continue. I plan to be here.”
