It was just another day in the office for Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The 6-time world champion was his usual brilliant self during the qualifying session at the Hungaroring.
He will start tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix in pole position after setting a scorching 1:13.447 lap time.

However, that wasn’t the highlight of Hamilton’s day. By bagging pole position on Saturday, Hamilton has made it a total of 90 (!) career pole positions in F1.
He currently stands 22 poles clear of the next best, Michael Schumacher. It was a record that even Lewis couldn’t quite believe.

After his brilliant qualifying session, Lewis walked towards the microphone to voice his thoughts. However, before the interview could even commence, Lewis caught sight of a graphic that popped up on the screen showing him that this was his 90th pole in Formula 1.
That bit of information left the Mercedes man awestruck as he uttered the words, “Holy Sh*t!” in disbelief. Surely after all the success, he has had in his F1 career, breaking another record wound not have astounded him.
But no, the man simply doesn’t race for records. He races to win, everything else that comes his way is obviously a bonus. That’s the right mindset to have and is a great example for those beginning their journey into the world of motorsport to follow.

The Silver Arrows looked, by far, the fastest cars on the circuit and another Mercedes 1-2 will be the most likely scenario for tomorrow’s race.
The other team on the grid to use a Mercedes engine, (and car?) Racing Point completed a second-row lockout. It is Lance Stroll who will start the race in P3 while his teammate Sergio Perez will start in P4, with the weight of the guillotine hanging heavy over his neck.
Can Racing Point spring a bigger surprise tomorrow by denying the Mercedes a 1-2? It seems unlikely, but for the sake of entertainment and some excitement, let us hope so.
