Scuderia Ferrari Reveal Reason Behind Drastic Lack of Pace in 2020

Scuderia Ferrari has been on the back foot for a considerable amount of the 2020 Formula 1 season. The Maranello-based outfit runs the risk of other teams catching up with them and potentially overtaking them.
Mattia Binotto has a theory explaining the reason behind the Italian giants’ struggles, mostly revolving around the power unit.
Initially, Binotto dodged several questions pertaining to the FIA investigation on the 2019 power unit. That investigation culminated in a “settlement” between Ferrari and the FIA, which is a separate can of worms.

Instead, he opened up on the 2020 car’s drag issues, which they tried to amend with an aero upgrade package in Austria.

What did the Ferrari boss say?
“I think that the regulations are very difficult and complex,” said Binotto to Motosport.com. “I think there are areas of the regulations where maybe clarifications are still required.
“It’s an ongoing process which has always existed in the past, and will exist in the future.”

He noted that the FIA issued a number of technical directives last year. The idea was to clarify a few grey areas within the regulations.

According to the Italian, the directives forced several teams to adapt quickly. However, he claims that Ferrari suffered a lot, with respect to its performance.
Furthermore, he has reason to believe that the factory shut down for the power units rang Ferrari’s death knell. Binotto said that the engine development process has been ongoing since 2012, so to stop it now would be a fool’s errand.
He confessed that they are yet to unlock the full potential of its aero update package. The Ferrari boss observed that practice is never a good time to judge the performance because of the focus on different programs.

He concluded, “We had a wet session and a bad race, very short, so really we didn’t have an answer from them, so today for us the program was to understand the car, and then to try to find the balance for the rest of the weekend.
“We’ve got again a lot of data to analyze. The two drivers are certainly focused on the weekend, we know that qualy will be important here, grid position is key in Hungary, so we need to prepare well for the qualy tomorrow.”
