Recently, Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi spoke to Sky Sports F1 in a live chat. The Italian driver addressed rumours of him being on the Ferrari shopping list to replace Sebastian Vettel He admitted that he was “really happy”, even though the team ultimately decided to run with Carlos Sainz Jr for 2021.

When Vettel elected to leave at the end of 2020, many touted Ferrari Academy graduate, Giovinazzi to take his place. He even had an impressive season at Alfa Romeo in 2019 despite a shaky start. In spite of this, Ferrari evidently felt that he was not ready and elected to pursue Sainz.

“I’m still part of that family and I was really happy to have at least maybe the possibility to take that seat,” Giovinazzi told Sky F1. “In my career I never had something easy, I always fight. And I think now was maybe not the right time after 23 Grand Prix. Last year I grew up really well during the year, but this year we haven’t raced so it’s really difficult for me. I’m still young so I’m sure if I continue like that and continue to fight, really work hard I can have that possibility.”

Why Antonio Giovinazzi is not Ferrari material yet

The 26-year old is aware that Charles Leclerc got a promotion to Ferrari after one season. However, in his own case, he struggled in the second half of the season with the car. Despite the struggles, he is still part of Ferrari and Mattia Binotto insisted that he is keeping an eye on him.

He concluded, “I’m sure that still working with Alfa Romeo, still we can do a great result together. This is my main target for now because it’s my team now. In the future we will see. I’m still a Ferrari driver so I’m sure I can maybe have the opportunity.”

Antonio Giovinazzi also pledged his support to Lewis Hamilton in his fight against racism and inequality. The six-time champion, has been deeply affected by the death of American George Floyd. Even Giovinazzi sent out a tweet earlier this month. He explained that as a representative of Italy, his duty is show support for such a cause. He knows that it was right to do, and the same applies for Lewis Hamilton.
