It has been more than a decade since Fernando Alonso won a race in F1. The Spaniard is looking for his 33rd win of his career but it has remained elusive. A move to Aston Martin, however, has rekindled the fire that, during his time at Alpine, looked to have doused. The upcoming Monaco GP is perhaps the best chance he will have in the entire season to get the monkey off his back. Turns out, even the title defender, Max Verstappen, is rooting for him. Fans, however, smell hypocrisy in the Dutchman’s comments.

Alonso went on a two-year hiatus when things did not look to be working out for him. He returned in 2021, driving for Alpine (rebranded from Renault), the team he had won his two back-to-back championships with. However, that two-year stint turned out to be underwhelming as well. In the middle of the 2022 season, the Spaniard announced his signing with Aston Martin, a move that many questioned. That is because the Silverstone-based team finished the 2022 season in 7th while Alpine in 4th. Results in 2023, however, have shut those critics down.

Aston Martin’s 2023 car is known for producing immense amounts of downforce in the slow corners. That quality will definitely come in handy for a circuit like Monaco and makes Alonso one of the favorites to end Red Bull’s undefeated run in the season until now. Eve Verstappen backs him for it.

In a recent interview with AS, he said, “I know that Fernando thinks that here he has the opportunity to do it and, honestly, I would love to see Fernando win. He should have won a lot more races than he has and he should have won a lot more titles than he has. Fernando is very good. He is still showing it, he is 41 years old and it is crazy to see him still at this level. I have a lot of respect for Fernando.” [Translated using Google]
