Lewis Hamilton-Mercedes Contract Saga Conclusion Reportedly ‘Not Imminent’

With just under two months to go for the 2021 winter testing session, one seat on the F1 grid remains vacant. Although Lewis Hamilton ideally should occupy that, it is possibly not as straightforward as it seems.
Speculation has arisen leading to Mercedes now having a few options at their disposal. While Hamilton is the first choice, an impasse could mean turning to George Russell.
A latest report has indicated that both parties have been conversing for the past few weeks now. Although, the announcement of the new contract might not be ‘imminent’ as yet.

Mercedes is confident Lewis Hamilton will extend his stay
A report by the Press Association as quoted by PlanetF1 states, “It is understood both parties have been in dialogue in recent weeks, and although discussions are progressing, a conclusion to the saga is not imminent.”
“Mercedes are confident Hamilton, awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours list, will extend his stay with the sport’s all-conquering team.”

The report also says that an initial one-year deal is on the table for the Mercedes driver. In all possibilities, Hamilton might want a multi-year deal. This has probably led to the continued negotiations between both parties.
“But the length of his new contract is under scrutiny, with reports the record-breaking Briton has been offered only a one-year deal.”

Hamilton had a brilliant 2020 season achieving his seventh championship
Hamilton delivered a showing that we are all so used to seeing as he cruised to his seventh F1 drivers’ championship. His strong performances earlier on set up the platform for a dominant season where he won 11 races.
Only missed opportunities at Sakhir and Abu Dhabi prevented Hamilton from securing a tally of 13 wins in a season. But it only goes to show how good of a racing legend the Briton has become since joining F1.

The title win meant he equaled the mighty Michael Schumacher’s record for championships with seven. But, as it stands, Hamilton now needs a new contract if he has any intention of creating further history.
