With the allegations of inappropriate and controlling behavior against Christian Horner, one of the most respected figures in the paddock, there’s an air of toxicity surrounding Formula 1 right now. But amidst the flood of rumors surrounding the ensuing investigation, it’s easy to forget that Formula 1 has always been a beacon of excellence, whether it’s about technological excellence or the human side of things. Lewis Hamilton is the prime example of what it means to be a force for good when you have the power to influence those around you. A recent story shared by F1 journalist, Rebecca Clancy for The Sunday Times, highlighted how Lewis Hamilton once helped women enjoy certain privileges in a hotel in Saudi that were exclusive to men.

While Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula 1, off the track, he has striven to bring about positive change in society. Whether it’s about diversity and equal opportunity or helping organizations that support the future of underprivileged children through his Mission 44 foundation. And the recent story is just a small example of his efforts to bring about change.

Rebecca recently shared an interesting story as reported by The Times about her experience with Lewis Hamilton, with whom she’s always had a good relationship. Highlighting the male-dominated nature of Formula 1, Rebecca recounted a brunch meeting with Hamilton along with other journalists from Fleet Street, a well-known area in London associated with the British press, just before a race in Saudi Arabia in 2021.

Clancy described the Mercedes driver as polite and engaging, noting his habit of making eye contact when answering questions, which speaks to his demeanor and respectfulness. During their conversation at brunch, Hamilton, who has been vocal about the lack of diversity in F1, asked Clancy about her experience as a woman in the sport. She shared that she never felt treated differently in any way.

However, she described how Hamilton helped female media personnel enjoy the access to pool and gym, which was originally restricted at the media hotel. She wrote, “I did mention that I was heading to Saudi Arabia the next day and was slightly hesitant about it because at the media hotel women weren’t allowed to use the pool or the gym. The next day, an email was sent to all media which said women would have the same access to the hotel facilities as men. Hamilton had had a word.

His commitment to continue speaking on social issues was cemented when he went against FIA’s new guidelines that came in December 2022 that mandated drivers to obtain written approval before making or displaying what the FIA classifies as “political, religious, and personal statements or comments” during races. “We’re not going to limit our views or our thoughts because of some silly regulation, We’re all here to have free speech and share whatever views we may have,” Hamilton stated in response to the new guidelines according to the Japan Times.
