But the stakes are even higher now after Liam Lawson has doubled the pressure on the Honey Badger.

If you thought Sergio Perez’s seat was under threat from Daniel Ricciardo, think again. The Honey Badger, who excelled in the RB19 test at Silverstone 2023, is now losing to his 23-year-old teammate. This even led Australian F1 champ Alan Jones to claim that Ricciardo’s career might be past its peak. While this happens, Perez seems to have recovered from his downward spiral. And Liam Lawson, who is patiently waiting in the wings looks more promising.

At the Adelaide Motor Festival that was organized on the weekend before the Australian GP, Lawson was asked if was ready to replace Ricciardo. “Absolutely,” Lawson told Fox Sports, as quoted by Soymotor. “I think Daniel knows that the potential is there, but I’m sure he’s probably expected to step it up.”

The 22-year-old Kiwi concluded, “Obviously, this year is the first in a time in which everything is exactly the same. It becomes very difficult to get a seat when there are several kids. I feel that I am prepared, but there are also many others.” 

That’s a high level of confidence from a man who knows his worth. In 2023, he showed the world what he is capable of achieving. And if the opportunity arises, the “cut-throat” Red Bull seat is what he wants to aim for.

There is more drama within the four walls of Red Bull than the entire F1 paddock combined. While the Christian Horner Investigation keeps going back and forth, so do the talks of their drivers’ performance (except Max Verstappen’s, of course). Can Lawson be the answer to their search for consistency?

“Ultimately my goal is to get back in that seat as soon as possible,” the New Zealand young gun told Fox Sports while addressing his hopes for 2025 and beyond. “Red Bull is pretty cut-throat. I would love to drive for them. But ultimately I want to be in F1 regardless.”
