With each passing year, there has been a lot more emphasis on environmental sustainability. To that end, the Mercedes F1 team wants to do its part to protect the environment. The German outfit recently announced that they plan to be carbon neutral by the end of 2020.

It is also worth noting that Formula One itself is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality. However, their target is a little further away than Mercedes’ target. In fact, F1 has set a deadline of 2030 to achieve carbon neutrality.

In addition to that, Mercedes is working with the FIA to increase the level of renewable fuels in the championship. The German giants are also pushing for an increase of electrical power, a project which will share links with F1’s electric counterpart, Formula E.

Apparently, Mercedes’ plans to reduce CO2 dated back to 2018 and has progressed by nearly 50%. The team began their pro-environment crusade, ever since they powered the factory facilities on renewable energy.

Unfortunately, CO2 emissions from its motorsport activities is a necessary evil. So, the 6-time world champions will work with the Gold Standard project to reduce its carbon footprint as much as possible.

“Sustainability is very important to me personally; I’ve become more and more aware of the environmental issues we’re facing around the globe and I just want to have a positive impact and try to play my part in it,” confessed six-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton.

“I’ve changed to a plant-based diet and changed the way I travel and started off-setting my flights I’ve started to drive both plug-in hybrids and all-electric Mercedes vehicles and put sustainability at the heart of other ventures I’m involved in, such as my new clothing collection with Tommy Hilfiger.

How else is Mercedes aiding the environment?

Mercedes Formula E driver Nyck De Vries recently spoke about the all-electric series. He believes that Formula E help showcase the performance of fully electric race cars. The young Dutch driver even praised Mercedes for taking such ambitious steps towards sustainability in motorsport.

He said, “It’s great to see the efforts that are being made at our hubs in Brixworth and Brackley, which benefit our Mercedes teams in both Formula 1 and Formula E.”
