Out of nowhere, the floodgates opened at the 2023 Singapore GP for Mercedes to roll down the years and steal an emphatic win at the Marina Bay Circuit. After a late VSC, the duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell pitted for fresh mediums. And thus began their charge towards the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz Jr. But this is 2023, and in the new era of the Silver Arrows, Russell has been often ahead of Hamilton. But did the Brit ruin his 7x champion teammate’s evening?

Well, Russell did ruin his own race as he crashed out of the Singapore GP on the very last lap, which left him utterly broken, as he tried to find a way through Lando Norris with Hamilton hounding him from behind. But according to ex-Ferrari manager, Peter Windsor, with the evidence on record, Russell’s late charge during yesterday’s race actually cost Hamilton a shot at victory.

George Russell blamed for ruining Hamilton’s shot at the Singapore GP win

Both the Mercedes cars were rapid on their medium tire stint towards the end of the race. But even then, Hamilton, though behind Russell, looked far racier than his counterpart. Alas, as he was stuck behind Russell until he crashed, Hamilton could only muster a 3rd placed finish. But according to Windsor, if Russell had moved away, Hamilton would’ve been a Grand Prix winner for the first time since Jeddah, 2021.

On his YouTube channel, Windsor explained, “I think if George [Russell] had been behind Lewis [Hamilton], and Lewis had driven the stint he did on the new mediums, I think he might have won it because his tires were in a better shape at the end than George’s.”
