The Formula 1 driver market suddenly opened up when Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari announced that they had entered a partnership for 2025. In no time, multiple drivers were linked with the soon-to-be vacant seat at Mercedes including the likes of Fernando Alonso, Mercedes’ junior driver Kimi Antonelli, and even Carlos Sainz, who is getting replaced by Hamilton at Ferrari. However, another exciting prospect for the Mercedes seat is Sebastian Vettel, the four-time world champion who left the sport back in 2022.

While Vettel has acknowledged that he has been in touch with Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, he recently explained that he has been in touch with most of the teams in the paddock, not just Mercedes, and it’s not necessarily regarding a racing seat in 2025. During a recent conversation on ‘The Fast and the Curious’ podcast, co-host Betty asked Vettel, “Do you still keep in touch with the paddock at all? Do still message anyone?”

However, surprisingly, Vettel explained that he indeed has been in contact with other teams but it’s about some other stuff that he has been planning. I’ve been in contact with most teams because I am also trying or thinking of some events potentially this year together with Formula 1, said Vettel. “So, to pitch them or launch them, speaking to all the teams. Also to Toto, and of course you also talk about what’s going on, but it wasn’t the main topic. I didn’t call to ask for a seat or to ask for a drive.

While Vettel may not be looking for an immediate comeback into F1, he has made it clear that he would not say no to a project that allows him to fight at the front of the grid. Could Mercedes really be that option for the German driver?

Lewis Hamilton considers Sebastian Vettel as a perfect fit for Mercedes

Hamilton recently shared his thoughts on the prospect of Sebastian Vettel replacing him at Mercedes in 2025. He expressed his support for Vettel, stating that he would “love” to see the German driver make a comeback to the sport.

Hamilton added, “I think he would be an amazing option for the [Mercedes] team, to have a multiple world championship-winning driver, someone who’s got amazing values to continue to take this team forward… I would love it if he came back.”

Speaking on the qualities of the driver he thinks should inherit his seat at Mercedes, Hamilton noted, “I think the only thing I really care about is that the team takes on someone with integrity and values that are aligned with the team, where the team is going. Someone with compassion that’s able to work with all these great people, continue to lift them up.”
