Would you consider a $177,000 Mercedes AMG GT 63 essential? Probably not. But Lewis Hamilton does. The 7x champion is known quite well for his car collection, which is estimated to be almost worth $15 million. He owns everything from modern supercars and hypercars to classics like the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 and the 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

It’s fair to say that he has good taste when it comes to cars. However, despite having these incredible machines in his garage in Monaco, Hamilton has become more conscious of the environment in recent years. He doesn’t use his cars very often and chooses to drive electric vehicles instead as his daily driver.

Although he might not drive petrol-powered cars that often anymore, he does like to test some incredible machines from time to time, and the Mercedes AMG GT 63 was one of his recent test cars, and he loved it. He loved it so much that in a recent Instagram post, he called the car “essentials.” The post was part of a photoshoot where he stood at the back of the GT 63 in various poses. What’s interesting is that he doesn’t own the car himself.

The AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ comes with a handcrafted 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, delivering an impressive 630 horsepower at 5,500–6,500 rpm. Mated to a speedshift MCT-9 speed automatic transmission, the car accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 3.1 seconds—an impressive machine indeed.

The British driver recently took the AMG GT 63 on a hot lap in Immendingen.

Lewis Hamilton was mighty impressed with the performance of the GT 63

Hamilton took the car for a spin during the winter break near Danube, Germany, and pushed the GT 63 to speeds of up to 137 miles per hour, or nearly 220 kilometers per hour, as can be seen on the Mercedes-AMG YouTube channel. Although the car comes nowhere near the levels of performance he is used to in an F1 car, he found the characteristics of the car enjoyable.

During the test, he gave his verdict on the car’s performance as he was experiencing it and he only had good stuff to say about it. “It’s got great power, feels great over the kerbs, super responsive, you know. Such a nice balance on the way in. Nice and smooth in the steering. It’s got great power, power delivery is really strong. It’s got a lot of power this thing. The balance on the way in is so nice, so smooth,” said the 7-time world champion.
