Lewis Hamilton has finally made his way to the 2024 MET Gala in style. The Mercedes star is no stranger to the Vogue event, he’s been there five times before, making quite the fashion statement each time. He’s even used his platform to shine a light on Black designers. And once again, the 7-time champion arrived on the big stage and stole the show with a classic black Garden of Time outfit from a $5.3 Billion Brand, Burberry as his way to pay tribute to Black history.

The rumors of Hamilton attending the Gala started during the Miami Grand Prix weekend because it was scheduled so close to the race on Sunday. Also, Hamilton’s interactions with American singer Camila Cabello during the race weekend, who had confirmed her presence at the Gala beforehand was also a strong sign that Hamilton might return to the MET Gala this time.

The Dress Code surrounding the theme of Garden of Time was focused on celebrating the life of John Ystumllyn, believed to be the first Black gardener of Britain, who lived in the 1700s. He had a really tough start to life being the victim of the Atlantic slave trade. However, despite all that hardship, he found a way to shine bright. Being a gardener, there’s a special rose named after him, the John Ystumllyn Rose. It’s a pretty yellow color, like sunshine in flower form. It’s believed to be the first rose flower to be named in the UK after a person from an ethnic minority.

Hamilton had also hinted at his presence at the MET Gala by posting an Instagram story showcasing a portrait of John Ystumllyn.

While there was a clear desire for the British driver to represent Black history through his outfit as demanded by the dress code of the Gala, there was a special reason why he chose the particular outfit from Burberry.

Speaking to the presenters from Vogue, Hamilton spoke briefly about the story of John Ystumllyn and why he chose the particular outfit from Burberry. Inside the black coat, there was a poem written by Alex Wharton, who was a black poet in England as well.

The poem inside Lewis’ coat is called ‘The Gardener’ and it reads as follows; “I hope the sun pours light upon our skin. And we melt into each other, into everything. Maybe the trees will speak, as they sometimes do. Whispers from the shade – Run, run away.”
