The legendary Michael Schumacher’s nephew, David Schumacher, is currently competing in the German Touring Car Championship, DTM. The final race of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters’ 2022 didn’t go so well for the German racer.

David, who drives with Mercedes-AMG Team Winward, reportedly endured injuries from a crash this past week at Hockenheim. There was a safety car restart, post a panic-fueled lap. However, that was followed by a crash that involved several drivers, including Schumacher, that resulted in a red flag.

Schumacher was going neck-to-neck with Thomas Preining for the seventh position. However, on turn eight, they made contact, which led them to crash and hit the barrier at a high speed.

When Schumacher was eventually taken to the hospital in Salzburg, the doctors revealed that he suffered a fracture in his lumbar vertebra and needs to wear a corset until he recovers. This might take up to six weeks.

David’s father, the former F1 driver, Ralf Schumacher, said, “When David came home, he was still complaining of back pain. We then decided to go to a hospital in Salzburg to have an MRI done. It turned out that a lumbar vertebra was fractured.”

Ralf Schumacher explained that David would not be needing surgery. But he’d need to rest for a few weeks now.

What actually happened at Hockenheim?

The horrific crash had three talented drivers roped in. As Thomas and David made contact, it also caused problems for Porsche’s Dennis Olsen.
