Lewis Hamilton has had a lifelong obsession with Brazilian great Ayrton Senna. Many have drawn comparisons between the two in terms of their driving style. Having won the world championship 7 times, like Michael Schumacher, the Brit has also inspired comparisons with the German great. An F1 legend has now put him higher than the two former champions for a trait that makes him stand out.

Despite more than a year passing, the controversy around Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s crash at Silverstone in 2021 has refused to die. Both drivers blamed each other for the first-lap incident that ended the Dutchman’s race. Later, even team principals got involved in the war of words. As pundits discussed the crash, we got even more different views.

In his Twitch stream, Peter Windsor said, “I think if you’re talking about trackcraft only, I think Lewis is head and shoulders above both of them because he really doesn’t do anything dirty at all. Everything Lewis does is hard, impressive, occasionally ends in tears – Nico Rosberg in Barcelona [in 2016] – but, generally speaking, he doesn’t do anything dirty at all.”

“I know a lot of you are going to say, well, what about Silverstone with Max Verstappen?” he added. “But these are two guys that have just spent half of the Silverstone lap alongside one another, within an inch of one another. They come out of Luffield and Max bogs down a little bit. What’s Lewis going to do, just sit behind him? No, he’s going to go to the right.

In terms of driving a clean race, Windsor put Hamilton ahead of both Senna and Schumacher. However, when it came to comparing the racing styles, he had a definitive answer as to which former champion Hamilton’s resembled more like.

Who is Lewis Hamilton more comparable to, Schumacher or Senna?

Schumacher’s drive always made you feel as if he was one with the car. Often winning races with ease, it almost looked effortless, as if he was floating on the tarmac. The German great’s feel for the brake, the throttle, and the steering was unmatched in his era. That quality is what Windsor believes Hamilton possesses as well.

He said, “I would say Lewis is nearer to Michael. In terms of the way he uses the throttle and the brakes and the steering, I think he’s much nearer to Michael.”

“In fact, I think he’s ahead of Michael in a couple of significant areas and I think he’s a little bit softer than Michael in all his inputs, particularly with braking,” he continued. “I think Lewis’s feel for the brake pedal is probably better than any driver in the history of the sport in terms of how he applies it and the rate at which he comes out of it.”
