It was a huge shock for the F1 community when reports of Adrian Newey leaving Red Bull came to light a couple of days ago. He is one of the most successful individuals in the history of the sport with the cars designed by him winning over 2 dozen combined drivers’ and constructors’ championships. His decision to leave Red Bull at the height of its dominance supposedly stemmed from the political unrest within the organization and the team which was centered around Christian Horner.

It’s a no-brainer that a technical mastermind like Adrian Newey will be highly sought after by the other teams. Ferrari has been trying to get its hand on him for two decades now. However, a few weeks ago, during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix weekend, reports were suggesting that Aston Martin Co-owner and Executive Chairman, Lawrence Stroll had offered him a massive deal to join the Silverstone-based team. However, the former Ferrari boss believes that Newey will not join Aston Martin regardless of how much money he is offered.

Peter Windsor believes that Newey’s decision will be driven by his passion for racing and whether a team aligns with his goals and interests. In a recent live chat on his YouTube channel, Windsor explained, “I don’t think money is a motivation for Adrian. I think it’s racing and it’s whether he enjoys it and whether it’s going to fit in with what he wants to do with other things in life. And you throw a billion pounds at him now and it’s not going to make a lot of difference. My understanding is that he’s already rejected that. So I’d be surprised if he goes to Aston [Martin]…”

In terms of where Adrian Newey might go next, Windsor thinks that it will either be Ferrari or Mercedes. However, Windsor suggests that Newey might lean towards Ferrari, given his faith in team principal Fred Vasseur. He added, “His option would be if I’m going to go to Mercedes, am I going to go to Ferrari? Which one would I rather go to because they’re both two big political teams…”

“He knows he could go do a good job at both of them. Which one would he rather go to? My gut feeling is that he’d rather go to Ferrari if it’s going to be one of those two because it’s just probably going to be a bit more fun being in Italy, a completely new challenge, and he probably has a lot of faith I would imagine in Frederic Vasseur,” Windsor concluded.

Amidst all the hype surrounding Newey’s exit, we shouldn’t forget that he is contracted at Red Bull till the end of 2025. And we can be sure that they will do everything they can to stop him from leaving.

While there have been several reports hinting at Newey’s intent to leave Red Bull, there has been no formal resignation and the news has caught both Newey and the team off guard. According to a recent report from The Guardian, Newey has still to discuss his future with the team, and it is expected to happen soon.

If Newey does indeed decide to leave Red Bull, it could have a significant impact on the team. His departure might even influence the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, to reconsider his future with the team. However, Newey might be forced to reconsider his choices because of his gardening period which will prevent him from joining a team before 2027. This means that he will not be able to have any significant impact on the next generation of cars when the regulations change in 2026.

Where do you think Adrian Newey might go if he does leave Red Bull at the end of this season?
