Liam Lawson has been under the Red Bull umbrella for more than 5 years now. After impressing in 2023 when he got his chance on the big stage as a replacement for injured Daniel Ricciardo, he would have imagined getting a full-time drive in Formula 1 in 2024. However, Red Bull decided to stick with the pairing for Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda, while Lawson remained the reserve driver for Red Bull.

However, he recently warned Red Bull that he is willing to risk breaking ties with the Milton Keynes squad for a seat in 2025. And it seems like Red Bull does not want to let go of Lawson as recent reports are suggesting that the team has promised a race seat to Lawson in 2025. This decision comes only days after Lawson had some encouraging words to say about the Red Bull star driver, Max Verstappen.

Lawson described Verstappen as a competitive and aggressive driver on TV but emphasized that he’s a ‘nice guy’ outside of the car. He appreciated Verstappen’s openness to sharing advice, especially during Lawson’s debut year in Formula 1.

It’s encouraging news for Lawson, but what was the subtle warning that Lawson fired toward Red Bull that prompted the promise of a race seat in 2025?

Liam Lawson is willing to give up one dream for another bigger dream

It’s no surprise that Lawson wants to drive in Formula 1 full-time having already gotten the taste of it in 2023. And he was mighty impressive too, scoring points in Singapore in a car that didn’t deserve to be in the points. And having to go back to a reserve driver role after such a performance would have been a big disappointment for the New Zealander.

According to a recent report from Sports Illustrated, Lawson said in an interview with Motorsportweek.com that he wants to secure a spot on the Formula 1 grid for the 2025 season, even if it means exploring options outside of Red Bull. While he admits that Red Bull is the most competitive team in Formula 1 right now, Lawson remains pragmatic about his dream, understanding the need to chase a different path to achieve his goal of racing in Formula 1.

“Obviously, for me, the dream is to drive with Red Bull, and I’ve been with them now for more than five years,” Lawson said. However, he also admits to the reality of the situation, acknowledging that if his dream with Red Bull doesn’t materialize, he must look for opportunities elsewhere. “They’re the most competitive team in Formula 1 right now, so if I could choose, I would drive for them,” he added, “But my dream is to be in Formula 1, and if it can’t be with them, then obviously, I need to try and make that happen with somebody else.”
