Lewis Hamilton is considered to be one of the greatest drivers to grace the F1 paddock. Ferrari’s new boy, Carlos Sainz, thinks so too. However, Sainz believes it is hard to quantify Lewis Hamilton’s talent.

According to him, while it does not take away from his skills, Mercedes’ clear engine advantage over the rest of the grid makes it difficult to gauge just how talented the Briton is.

Lewis Hamilton is the best driver on the grid: Sainz

Sainz, in an interview, said, “I think Lewis is the best driver on the grid. I think he’s one of the most talented in history.”

He caveats this by saying, “But it is impossible to know because there are only two Mercedes out there to drive, and that is my point.”

The 26-year-old laments the fact that one team has all the advantage in F1. “It is unfortunate at the moment the sport is so team and machine-driven while there is so much talent on the grid right now.”

“All drivers could be within three-tenths of each other in a qualifying lap and then we are fighting for two seconds from the beginning to the end of the grid.”

He, however, thinks that Lewis Hamilton has that extra oomph to extract more from a Formula One car. He said, “What is difficult is to extract the last tenth, the last two-tenths of the car and I think that is what Lewis is particularly good at.”

Hamilton’s bid to become eight-time World Champion

Lewis Hamilton ended the 2020 season on quite a high, having broken multiple records, in addition to equaling Michael Schumacher’s record of most world championships.

Now, his simple aim would be to finally break that record this season by clinching his eighth title, cementing his name among the legends of the sport.

However, the Briton is yet without a contract, which means that he does not have a car to drive him to his eighth world title. His fans and F1 pundits are hoping that the contract negotiations end soon, and both Mercedes and Hamilton can begin their fight for their respective titles.
