Musical chairs aren’t just played in Formula 1. The silly season is an annual occurrence in the soccer world too. And from the looks of it, Chelsea FC has been stuck in this silly season for over a year. A game of musical chairs of managers, which started when Frank Lampard was sacked midway through the 2020-21 Premier League season, came full circle at the back end of the 2022-23 season when Lampard came back to Chelsea as caretaker to see out the season.

Chelsea FC made history this past season and in all the wrong ways. The Pride of London became the laughingstock of London. Owing to its worst season in Premier League history, Chelsea fan and former team boss of Jordan F1, Eddie Jordan, had things to say.

Eddie Jordan is hopeful of Chelsea’s future

The Blues came under new ownership in May 2022 when American billionaire Todd Boehly took over the club in a deal worth $5.3 billion. This happened after Chelsea had to cut its ties with former owner and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who, according to Eddie Jordan, “was a genius.” And he was. In his 19-year spell at the club, Chelsea won 21 trophies, winning every major one.

Since the takeover, the new owners have only seemed to make bad decisions for the club. And that started with the sacking of German manager Thomas Tuchel, who succeeded Frank Lampard at the club. “The new owners don’t seem to be in the same league [as Abramovich], and getting rid of Tuchel was a mistake,” Jordan said in his podcast, Formula For Success. It’s almost poetic how Chelsea had its worst season in the sport after one of its best managers was sacked. Tuchel joined the club in January 2021, leading the team to Champions League glory four months later. He turned the club around in a matter of months, and the Boehly thought it’d be wise to fire him just because Chelsea had a slow start to the 2022-23 season.

But Jordan, unlike Chelsea fans worldwide, hasn’t lost hope. He believes Boehly’s latest investment—signing a new manager—is a step in the right direction. According to Jordan, Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino can resurrect the club and guide it back to winning ways. Pochettino has had significant success working with clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspurs. He is the Spurs’ most successful manager, and for a club that hasn’t won any trophies, that’s saying a lot. While revealing he’s renewed his season-ticket holder pass worth $960, Jordan added, “Everybody is optimistic and hopeful for the future.”

Can Chelsea rise from the ashes?

Sacking Tuchel started the domino effect. Everything started falling apart after that, including the chemistry between players. This chemistry was further disrupted by Boehly continuously investing in new players, so much so that the new signings almost outnumbered the number of goals Chelsea scored this season. From how it performed last season, it’s difficult to imagine it was once a top-tier team. Jordan said, “It gives me no pleasure whatsoever to see where they are at the moment.” Chelsea finished 12th out of 20 in the Premier League, amassing only 44 points from 38 games.

But the only way from here is up. And with Pochettino in the Chelsea camp from this season on, Chelsea will aim to return to the top of the Premier League (if not the very top, at least the top half). If it’s any consolation, the last time Chelsea didn’t participate in any other European Championship (2016-17), it won the Premier League.
