Splints Are Off, Gloves Are On: Dominic Thiem to Resume Training Ahead of US Open 2021

Back in June, Dominic Thiem took a sabbatical from tennis, owing to a wrist injury. He missed several tournaments, including the Wimbledon Championships. However, after a two-month break, the Austrian has started to make his way back into the sport, slowly and steadily.
The number two seed at the tournament, he sustained a wrist injury at the Mallorca Open and had to pull out of the tournament After that, he took a complete break from tennis, as he had to wear a splint on his wrist.

Given how important physical health is for an athlete, Thiem knew he had to ease his way back into tennis. As a result, he started training with softballs first instead of opting for proper tennis balls straightaway.
However, his recent post suggests that he is ready for some proper action on the court.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Swapping the splint for my racket again.”
The Austrian wants to regain his form and recover before the commencement of the US Open. As the defending champion, he desperately wants to go deep in New York. Having taken extreme precautions to protect his wrist, he has made slow progress. A week of softball tennis has shown results, and the racquet will, hopefully, get him up to speed.
It will be a race against time for Thiem before entering the court in New York.

Even after a 9-9 win-loss record in 2021, Thiem has not witnessed a significant drop in his ATP ranking. The Austrian has not found any success this year in terms of winning a title. So, his best shot will be at playing in the US Open this month.
His best finish was at the ATP 1000 Masters in Madrid this year, when he reached the semifinals. However, he lost against Alexander Zverev in that round.
