Lewis Hamilton recently took a moment to reflect on what could have been. Despite his non-stop pursuit of victory on the racetrack, the 38-year-old revealed his connection to Hollywood’s iconic Top Gun franchise during an exclusive event in Dubai ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi. The Mercedes driver, still haunted by the regret of turning down a role in Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” paid homage to the movie’s legacy in a unique and expensive way.

Despite being a massive fan of the original 1986 “Top Gun” movie, Lewis Hamilton had to turn down the role of a fighter pilot in “Top Gun: Maverick.” In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hamilton expressed his initial excitement about the prospect, only to realize that squeezing in a film shoot alongside his F1 commitments was near impossible. “I’m a perfectionist,” he admitted. “There just wasn’t time.” The decision, he confessed, was “the most upsetting call that I think I’ve ever had.”

The seven-time world champion recently found himself in Dubai. He was attending an exclusive gathering to celebrate his team’s partnership with IWC Schaffhausen. Amidst all the glitz and glamor, the British racing icon revealed a $41,000 souvenir that served as a link to his unfulfilled Hollywood aspirations. His IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Top Gun Lake Tahoe, adorned with a Top Gun badge, is a testament to Hamilton’s passion for the iconic movie.

When asked by Vogue about his favorite timepieces in his watch collection, Lewis Hamilton shared, “My favorites are the Big Pilots, more so because I like the weight. I’m wearing a Big Pilot now, the Lake Tahoe. But I think I’ve just always liked the weight.”

“Also, the first Big Pilot that I had was a part of Top Gun. So at the back, it had a Top Gun badge, and I was a massive Top Gun fan. But I generally love all the timepieces. Particularly the Portugieser and I’ve done a new piece, the Tourbillon movement, which is my favorite movement.”

When asked about his big-screen debut, he told Sky Sports, “I’ll wait for my proper movie debut because I’m going to need to train and practice, because I don’t want to suck at it. If Top Gun 3 ever happens, I’m going to be in it, and I will miss a race for it, just so you know. I’m not going to give up that chance next time.”

One take at a time

I come from a family that lives and breathes football, but I never quite fit that mold. Ever since I was a kid, something about motorsport drew me in and helped me develop a lifelong love for racing. The sight of stock cars zipping past close to 200 miles an hour bumper to bumper just makes you appreciate the sport in a different way.
