Williams Racing has recently been at the center stage of media attention. There have been a lot of speculations regarding their permanent exit from the motorsport. Fortunately, both Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams and the FIA have shown optimism in continuing.

F1 managing director of motorsports, Ross Brawn, in a recent interview with RaceFans spoke out on the current situation of Williams. “There seems to be some, they tell us, very strong and credible interest. And we are optimistic they will continue,” he added. This is a ray of hope for the Williams community. Especially considering numerous reports last month regarding the initiation of talks with possible investors.

He also gave an insight into their current policy of preserving the existing 10 teams. When asked about the possible addition of teams, he denied any such changes.

“For the moment everything is based around 10 teams and I don’t think in this climate we would be looking to add teams imminently. We know some of them need some support. So we’re focussed on making putting those 10 teams in the best possible position. So I don’t think the question of extra teams is one that we’re focussed on at the moment.” 

What does this mean for Williams?

The last couple of months show some positivity regarding Williams’ future. Despite disappointment amongst fans, official information seems to prove otherwise. They have also sold a majority of stakes in one of their major businesses. This means that they get to cover all their operations for the remainder of this year.

Adding on to this, MD. Brawn also said, “If we do lose a team then there will be an opportunity for another team to come in. But it needs to be the right team, we can’t have what happened in the past, teams coming and going because they just haven’t got strong enough foundations.” Thus adding on to the board’s faith in the team.

Concluding from this, the grass is still greener on the other side, for Williams. F1 has a rigid team recruitment structure and they seem to have no plans, whatsoever, of any changes. They are currently focussing on the current pandemic affected season. After which they would have to think about the 2021 revised rules. In other words, Williams fans certainly have no reason to be worried.
