“That Was the Stupidest Thing He Could Do”- Former Manager Weber Reveals Michael Schumacher’s Biggest Mistake

We all know how Michael Schumacher‘s return to F1 with Mercedes quite didn’t work out. The legendary driver had announced his retirement after the 2006 season. By that time Michael Schumacher had already won a record 7 world titles, so he was going out as the greatest F1 driver of all time. But it turns out Schumacher couldn’t be separated from F1 for too long and he returned with Mercedes in 2010. However, he wasn’t the same as he was before. When he returned, he did so without his manager of more than 20 years, Willi Weber. Weber now reveals why he didn’t join Schumi for the German’s last rodeo with Mercedes.
Michael Schumacher was warned not to return to F1 by Willi Weber
In an interview with Motorsport-Total.com, Weber reveals the two main reasons behind why he parted ways with Schumacher. Firstly, Weber didn’t like the idea of a comeback, he said, “With all due respect: in hindsight, that was the stupidest thing he could do. He told me he was bored, he had to drive. Then I said: Michael, what do you want? You can only lose. You can no longer win, you won everything. You’re the best racing driver in the world. You stand on the highest pedestal there is. You can only lose now. But he just didn’t want to hear.”
“The second reason was that after the years of abstinence in Formula One, I didn’t want to pack suitcases anymore, didn’t want jet lag, didn’t want to be on the plane for 24 hours. That was all for me a lot. I imagined all this and offered him that I wouldn’t take part in overseas races, but I would look after him in Europe. Then he kept coming back and said: Willi, I thought about it, I’ll do it on my own. I’ll do it myself. So I said: Michael, this is also a huge mistake. Let it be!”

However, after Schumacher’s insistence, Weber said, “If you really want to, let’s part as friends. I wished him the very best there was. But I also knew it was going to go wrong.” And it did go wrong. Schumacher only managed one podium in three years with Mercedes. However, that remains the only speed bump in an otherwise magnificent career for the German legend.
