For the 2021 F1 season, Daniel Ricciardo is set to join the McLaren team, replacing the Ferrari-bound Carlos Sainz. The Australian recently appeared on the F1 Nation podcast to speak on a few subjects. Among them, he discussed the future McLaren move and why he chose to head to Woking.

He said, “Obviously, the reality is that you get pitches from whichever team that is talking to you. To some extent, especially now, without having any races and any kind of proof other than last year. You kind of, have to believe, what pitch excites you more than the other.”

Daniel Ricciardo noted that drivers have to go with what they feel and think at the time. In his case, last year was the best reference for McLaren’s speed. The Renault driver observed that McLaren became the team that made the biggest step forward.

Daniel Ricciardo was convinced by McLaren’s switch back to Mercedes.

After six long years, McLaren is reuniting with Mercedes and hoping to relive their glory days. Ricciardo admitted that the outfit would be excited, though it was not an easy decision, especially since the 2020 data is limited.

Nevertheless, Ricciardo is eager to bring the team back to the front and add to his seven wins. McLaren is already on the right track, especially after Carlos Sainz’ podium in Brazil last year. The British outfit emerged as Best of the Rest last year and are eager to close the gap to the Big 3 teams.

With an experienced head like Daniel Ricciardo alongside a young gun like Lando Norris, McLaren could go far. Who knows, maybe it won’t be long before the team gets back to winning ways. McLaren have not won a single championship since Lewis Hamilton in 2008. The team’s last win also came way back in 2012, so wins and a potential title is long overdue.
