Sergio Perez was elated about his World championship bid against Max Verstappen, but the same enthusiasm was not shared in the Red Bull garage. After Perez’s double win in Baku, Christian Horner was heard on the radio saying, “Yeah, well done, Max. Checo [Perez] got a little lucky with the safety car there, but it’s a long, long season.” This raised questions if Red Bull would really allow their drivers to duel on-track while putting Perez in a difficult situation. Well, he is suggested to ‘do as Nico did with Lewis’.

It is no secret that the Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg didn’t have a strong relationship. The duo infamously caused chaos on the track and even threatened to dismantle the team as they fought for wins and titles. Ultimately, Rosberg won the Championship in 2016, ending Hamilton’s 2-year dominance. However, just days after winning the title, Rosberg announced his retirement, leading to speculations that Mercedes forced Nico out. Whatever the reason may be, in the end, Nico Rosberg retired from Formula 1 on top – as the world champion.

Suggesting Perez to follow Rosberg’s footsteps, the former British driver Johnny Herbert said, as quoted by Formula Passion,If it’s your only chance, do as Nico did with Lewis  – he wasn’t popular within the team, and his relationship with Wolff I think wasn’t very good, but he still won the world championship. If it’s your only chance, you’ll go out of your way to put that title on the wall. If you get kicked out at the end of the season, the trophy will still be yours.”

If the Mexican driver tries and succeeds, it’d be even more impressive than Nico Rosberg’s win in 2016. But if he fails, though, it’ll be the end of his time at Red Bull. So the question that remains is, can he succeed?

Max Verstappen – a better candidate for the F1 title

After a double victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Sergio Perez closed the gap to Max Verstappen to just 6 points in the Championship standings. This reignited his hopes for the F1 world championship bid. But Red Bull boss Christian Horner clearly doesn’t have faith in Perez beating his teammate. Even before the season began, he declared Verstappen as a more likely candidate for the F1 title.

He said, “Of course he’s [Verstappen] the man to beat, he’s the reigning World Champion, and Checo has to strive for that, otherwise why is he competing? But I think the reality is, all the probability is, that Max over the season is likely to be the more likely candidate for the World Championship. But Checo also he has the capability to be right there and we need both drivers performing at the best of their ability for the Constructors’ Championship.”

After all, Christian Horner was not wrong, and it became clear after the Miami Grand Prix. During the race, the 2x champ finished on top despite starting from P9, while the Mexican only managed to finish second after starting from the pole.
