People rightly say, “All good things must come to an end,” and so has lately been the case with Mercedes. Toto Wolff’s squad rocked the grid for almost a decade. However, the introduction of the new regulations last year triggered their imminent downfall. The team has solved its porpoising issues from last year. But other problems have come up, thus continuing their free fall.

The team appears to be lost in its development. They are so unaccustomed to losing that they seem to have hit panic mode already, as their recent letter to the fans attests. Moreover, they have already considered their season over and are focusing on their 2024 challenger, as the boss has directed his engineers toward the drawing board. Things don’t get easy for the team and its fans even here. The cost restrictions and rigidity in the team’s philosophy will be a major hurdle to jump over for the Brackley-based squad.

Mercedes’ path ahead will be one where they have to make tough choices. They are far behind other teams in terms of development. Laurence Edmondson at the Unlapped Podcast highlighted such factors and issues. He said, “And as Toto correctly said on Sunday, they’re already a year behind. I mean, realistically more than that, because there was all the development of the car going into last year, there was all of last year. Now we’re here.”

“And Toto said that really they’ve got to focus on basically pick their design philosophy now for the future and focus on one. Because you can’t afford to focus on two. One, you’ll get a bit lost with development, but also under the budget cap, with limited resources, and also under the aerodynamic testing restrictions that all teams have. The teams further up the grid have even more. There’s not the bandwidth or the money to go chasing multiple concepts. So they have to change their concept.”

An outright bad start for Mercedes has left everyone scratching their heads for excuses. So amid hard times for the team’s fans, George Russell has presented a little hope for the weekends ahead as he blames the Bahrain circuit for the team’s woes.

As per RacingNews365, the Briton was quoted as saying, “Bahrain for sure is an outlier circuit, but it’s not going to swing more than three tenths plus or minus. I’d like to think this would probably be one of our more difficult circuits. Even if you look at Mercedes in the past, this has never really been one of their strongest circuits.”
