We are all familiar with the quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.” And this has been well understood and undertaken by the younger of the two Mercedes drivers, George Russell, as he tries to make the most of his stardom, following in the footsteps of his teammate and seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton. But what did the guy from the “George Russell is the type of guy…” meme do?

Well, using the opportunity provided to him, while speaking to Men’s Health UK, the Brit talked about a very crucial and arguably taboo topic: men’s mental health. George talked about his experiences openly and encouraged men to be more open to psychological help as he recalled the moment that prompted him to start therapy nearly two years ago.

In a YouTube video from Men’s Health UK’s channel, Russell confessed, “I only started getting into it about a year and a half, two years ago, when I started to speak with a psychologist, mainly for my on-track personal performance.”

Speaking about his experience with therapy, he said, “The moment when I thought I need to seek some professional help was when I had a really difficult race. I had a crash it was a very low point in my career, and I thought I could just pick myself up from that moment.”

“And I always picking myself up but we decided to speak with a professional and I was so grateful that I was advised to do that because I came away from that conversation and that meeting with him feeling so much better about myself.”

Topics such as these need support, and a general discourse needs to be built around them. With celebs providing their voice, things can improve gradually as it gets discussed more often.
