It was Logan Sargent’s birthday yesterday and while he would have celebrated the day, he would also have wanted to forget his rookie season as we say hello to 2024. Williams has gotten stuck regarding their second driver for the last 4 years. Where one driver has scored the bulk of the points like it was with George Russell and now Alex Albon, the other driver, whether it was Nicholas Latifi, Robert Kubica, or now Logan Sargeant, has failed to deliver with the same car.

Williams scored 28 points in 2023 to take the 7th spot in the standing, and Logan Sargeant scored only one of those. And even that was thanks to the disqualification of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in Austin. It was clearly a difficult rookie season for the American driver. Not a single occasion did Sargeant out-qualify Albon or finish ahead of him on merit during the races.

However, Sargeant did make a significant contribution to the team in 2023 and it came in the season finale in Abu Dhabi when he held Daniel Ricciardo long enough to prevent him from reaching the top 10 and helping Williams secure 7th in the constructors’ championship, which ultimately would have helped them a great deal financially.

Despite his lackluster results, Williams chose to stick with Sargeant for 2024, going beyond the expected marketing appeal of having an American driver in an American-owned team. Team principal James Vowles emphasized his belief in the team’s young driver program and the challenges new talents face in making the jump to F1 due to limited testing opportunities.
