Every F1 team’s primary objective is to win races and the eventual world championship, however, there is a more inert objective. Each team is racing to find out ways to improve technology in the road car sector and the next big breakthrough will be implemented. Already, a number of modern supercars and hypercars use aspects like hybrid technology, Energy Recovery System (ERS) and Drag Reduction System (DRS). So Ferrari is trying to get ahead of the competition by introducing another F1-inspired innovation.

As it turns out, Ferrari has filed a patent for an F1-inspired halo that could be used in future supercars that will roll out of the Maranello factory. The patent was recently filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office by the Italian manufacturer.

According to the company, they have introduced a structural pillar running down the center of the car’s windshield. Some would say that it is reminiscent of the halo that is normally present on F1 cars.

As per reports on TheDrive, Scuderia Ferrari has put forward two separate solutions in the patent. First and foremost, a central pillar will be mounted externally in front of the windshield, while the second option is to have the pillar flanked by two individual windshields. One will be situated in front of the driver while the other will be in front of the passenger. In addition to that, the windshield wipers could be hidden behind this central pillar to improve aerodynamics.

Ferrari has reason to believe that this central spine will become a key structural piece and allow the company to reduce the width of a vehicle’s A-pillars. The engineers also suggested that another function of this ‘spine’ will be to redirect air into the cabin and act as a rear-mounted air conditioning system.

To navigate around potential visibility issues posed by a large pillar running down the center of the windshield, Ferrari would implement an external camera system to capture front-facing images and project them onto the windshield. According to the patent, the design could work with both fixed and convertible type cars.
