There has been a lot of speculation on the future of Red Bull’s star driver Max Verstappen. However, former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos is of the opinion that all will be clear within “one or two” races next year.

Verstappen’s contract is set to expire in 2020 and he has entertained thoughts of possibly switching to a faster top team for 2021.

“Nothing will happen in 2020,” Doornbos told Ziggo Sport. “Max can’t go anywhere yet. After that it will be a difficult choice, because you simply cannot see into the future.”

“One thing is for sure and that is that Mercedes will not continue to dominate Formula 1 for another four years.”

However, Doornbos is confident that Red Bull-Honda will successfully retain the services of Verstappen beyond 2020.

“It’s important for them to develop that car as well as possible next winter,” he said. “Max wants to see a good car next year if he is going to be convinced to stay. Max will be able to tell what kind of car he has after one or two race weekends. Based on that, he will make his choice quickly.”

The 22-year old is hopeful that Red Bull-Honda can step up and mount a serious challenge to the top two teams in 2020.
