Despite the changes being the result of the challenges by LIV Golf, it is not acceptable to everyone, including PGA Tour Player Director Peter Malnati. He recently candidly revealed his thoughts on the developments.

Why is the PGA Tour Player Director not happy with the changes?

Peter Malnati recently appeared on “Fire Drill,” hosted by Alan Shipnuck, Michael Bamberger, and Ryan French. There, he revealed his true feelings about the no-cut events. Malnati said he was “adamantly against the idea” of the PGA Tour, adding small fields with no cut events to its schedule. He explained the reason behind his disapproval and said, “That seems antithetical to me from the tour’s mission of identifying and rewarding the best golfers in the world. I feel like, you know, just on a simple scale, it just seems less competitive to me.“

Malnati is against it because he believes that these changes will only help already excellent players and no upliftment for the other potential players will be possible. Former professional golfer Paige Spiranac has supported the change, and Rory McIlroy hinted about it. But the official of the PGA Tour is not on board. He said, “It felt to me like a way to put more money into the pockets of the top players directly just to hand it to them. And that’s, that’s how I felt. And I was, you know, I was standing so strongly against that.“

What are the changes highlighted in the memo by the Tour commissioner?

On Wednesday, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan released a memo, and ESPN obtained a copy. Monahan announced in the memo that from next year, i.e., 2024, eight designated events will become part of the season schedule. With no cuts, the events will also have a reduced field size, between 70-80 players. The report states, “It’s another wave of dramatic changes as the PGA Tour continues to try to fend off a threat from the Saudi-financed LIV Golf League.”
