Arnold Palmer Once Taught a 19-Year-Old Jack Nicklaus a Valuable Lesson About the Game of Golf

Jack Nicklaus is one of the greatest golfers of all time. He has 73 PGA Tour wins and has bagged 18 major championships in his career as a professional golfer. Meanwhile, Nicklaus turned pro in 1961 and earned his first professional win at the 1962 U.S. Open, where he defeated Arnold Palmer by three strokes in a playoff. 

Moreover, Jack’s record for most wins at Augusta is still unbeaten. He has won six green jackets. However, Palmer had given a young Jack a valuable lesson. Hence, following this lesson, Nicklaus became the most successful golfer at Augusta and is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time.

Arnold Palmer is one of the legendary golfers. And during 1959, Palmer taught a valuable lesson to the young 19-year-old Jack Nicklaus. Moreover, this lesson helped Nicklaus win six Masters tournaments at Augusta National. So let us have a look at that lesson.

“When I played in 1959, my first year, I hit 31 greens in regulation in 36 holes,” revealed Nicklaus“I had eight three-putt greens. I shot 150. Arnold [Palmer] shot 141. He was leading the tournament. He hit 19 greens in regulation. I’m sitting there thinking, what does that tell me? It’s telling I’d better learn how to putt these greens. Because I can play the golf course. So that’s what I set out to do.”

Meanwhile, Jack Nicklaus, who had missed the cut at 1959 Masters, made a strong comeback and finally won the event for the first time in 1963. Furthermore, he even had top 10 finishes between 1964-1987, including five wins. He understood the importance of putting thanks to Arnold Palmer, who gave him this lesson in 1959.

Hence, in this way, Arnold’s lesson helped Jack to dominate the golfing world for years. Moreover, Palmer won this event four times in his career and has a total of seven major championships in his career. Additionally, he even has bagged 62 PGA Tours and is well known as the King in the golfing world.
