The golf gods have never been particularly nice to Bryson DeChambeau when he appears on the Augusta greens. Back in 2020, Bryson DeChambeau dared to claim that the Augusta National bears a resemblance to a par 67 instead of its traditional 72! If not before, but after this comment, the wrath of golf gods was surely upon him, as he missed the cut 2 years consecutively after that. Ever since the 30-year-old has regretted making the statement. “Reading the 67 comments, you know, you messed up. I’m not a perfect person. Everybody messes up. You learn from your mistake, and that was one”, was what he said in his defense.

Coming to this year’s Masters, the Scientist is all set to rewrite his narrative. He is currently in the lead for the ongoing first round of the Masters 2024, beating Scottie Scheffler by a stroke. The LIV Golfer managed to impress a lot many people on and off the greens. One among them was Gary Woodland, another fellow golfer at the Augusta National who tied for the 75 position.

Gary Woodland was spotted for a round of presser during the first round of the Masters at the Augusta National. He was asked about his observations of Bryson DeChambeau’s performance. He stated that, according to him, the Scientist is one of the greatest putters in the world. Woodland said, “The thing about Bryson, people don’t talk about it, he’s always been one of the best putters in the world.”

Well, the winds were indeed a huge hindrance for all the golfers on the greens, and to make such an exceptional score in the given weather can be pulled out only by the best. DeChambeau scored a total of eight birdies in the first round, noteworthy mention being two of them in the amen corner. Woodland was immensely impressed and added, “It was a clinic. It was impressive. He didn’t get out of position hardly at all, and he rolled it very, very nice.”

Woodland was also asked if he was surprised, given that the LIV Golfer had been struggling through all these years when it came to the Masters, to which the PGA Tour pro replied that although DeChambeau’s record has not been a great one, once he gets into his actual form as he did in round 1, well, there is no stopping and stated, “He makes a lot of putts. But when he drives it like that, he makes this golf course a little bit different.”

Although Gary Woodland was indeed happy with Bryson DeChambeau’s performance, it was not quite the same for his own. Given that this year marks the first Masters after his successful brain surgery, he was diagnosed with a lesion in his brain that affected the area of the brain that controlled fear and anxiety. After overcoming such turmoil, the PGA Tour pro finally seems to be in his element and at peace.

Gary Woodland is happy to be back on the greens

Gary Woodland, after bagging his career-best record at the Masters last year, did not have the best game in the first round of the tournament this year. He started with a double bogey and carded 2 more bogeys on the front nine. Coming to the back nine, he once again carded another double bogey as he entered the amen corner, but ended the stretch with a birdie, scoring a total of 3 birdies, sadly, his round ended on a bogey at Holly (18th Hole par 4). The 39-year-old score turned out to be 4-over 76, which dropped him for a tie at the 75 position.

Gary Woodland reflected on his performance, shared his insights about his gameplay during the first round, and iterated, “I drove the ball so poorly. It was windy and tough. Drive the ball and play like Bryson did, you can make some scores. But I got behind the 8-ball early and was grinding all day.” He started with a great warm-up session and was confident about everything, but he could not perform at his best! However, although he is frustrated with the way he played, he felt ‘nice to be back at it’. At the end of the day, isn’t that what matters the most?
