Tiger Woods’ early days with Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan

Woods made an immediate impact on the PGA Tour after making his debut in 1996. Being a popular name already, he was caddied by Mike ‘Fluff’ Cowan. The duo went on to win the 1997 Masters Tournament, which the golfer won by an astounding 12 shots.

The pair won seven PGA Tour titles in total, but eventually left each other in 1997. While the reasons were never revealed, one of the alleged explanations was that Fluff had revealed his financial agreement to a major media house.

As the years later would signify, Woods took no survivors from a wrecking ship. He began scouting for his next caddie, who would ultimately help him conquer the sport.

Steve Williams’ reign with Woods

Kiwi caddie, Steve Williams, was back home in New Zealand when he got the call from Woods. The two set up an interview, where the former was hired on the spot. It started one of golf’s most incredible partnerships, where the duo won almost everything on the tour.

During his time, Williams caddied Woods in 13 of his first 14 major championship wins. While the legendary golfer was often streets ahead of his competition, he needed the help of Williams at crucial junctures, like in the penultimate hole of his victory in the 1999 PGA Championship.

However, a decade of dominance was brought to an end after Woods fired Williams in the aftermath of his ugly split with his wife, Elin Nordegren. Despite being close to the golfer, the 59-year-old had no clue about Woods’ cravings, which broke the trust between the player and his caddie.

Since Williams’ exit, Woods has been caddied by Joe LaCava. The duo has stuck for more than a decade in a partnership that has led to success, especially during the triumphant 2019 Masters Tournament.
