Despite Staying Off Social Media, Lexi Thompson Admitted to Suffering Nightmares After Controversial Moment in 2017

Lexi Thompson once expressed how she felt after last year’s ANA Inspiration mishap, and how it resulted in prolonged nightmares for the pro golfer. The aforementioned cost her a major title and brought changes in the rules of golf.

Lexi Thompson is one of the LPGA Tour’s brightest stars. Thompson rose to prominence at the age of 12 when she competed in the US Women’s Open. She has always displayed qualities of dedication and hard work.

Lexi Thompson talked about the nightmares she faced after the controversial game

Thompson is one of the biggest names in women’s golf. However, things don’t always go the way we expect them to, and the same is true of Lexi Thompson. In 2017’s ANA Inspiration, Thompson faced a major setback when she was stuck at the center of a rule-break controversy.

The consequences that followed were dastardly. Not only did Lexi’s career suffer post this setback, but also her mental health. She admitted to having faced recurrent nightmares for an extended period of time after the incident occurred. The pro golfer also went off of social media to take a step away from the disasters that constantly being in the limelight brings into one’s life.

She said, “That night was extremely rough. I was screaming, and crying. I had nightmares about it. Still occasionally do. But the fans were behind me the weeks after, and the months after. I stayed off social media after that. I just hung out with my family, and just kind of stayed to myself.”

Thompson faced the wrath after two strokes incorrectly replaced a marked ball on the 17th green and another two for signing an incorrect scorecard. After this incident, there was a significant rule change in the game to prevent the same situation from happening again.

Additionally, Lexi also thanked her friends for supporting her throughout her journey. She implied the fact that her fans acted as a pillar of strength in these times of hardship and turmoil in her professional and personal life.

Lexi once talked about her emotional struggles

Thompson presents the world of golf with a superior skill set. Her inspiring style motivates women around the world to follow their passions. Even though Lexi’s life seems to be perfect from the outside, she is still no stranger to the struggles on the inside.

One’s personality develops and evolves throughout their life. Struggles sometimes act as a tool in changing a person’s perspective in life. Thompson, for one, does not shy away from talking about the struggles that she faces internally.

She said“The last year and a half, I have honestly been struggling a lot, emotionally, and it’s hard because I can’t really show it. I had to show that I was still okay and still play golf. And I don’t even know how I played that well, honestly.”

She made sure to point how she was numb throughout the exhaustive few months and how it affected her performance and awareness.

In a sport like golf, it is crucial for a player to have mental peace while on the course, as it requires not just the physical skillset of the player, but also their emotional and mental skills to be at play. Golf is a holistic sport and requires the complete well being of the players involved.
