‘Great Choice’: Golf World Reacts to Team Europe’s New Ryder Cup Captain

Only days after removing Henrik Stenson from his captaincy duty, Team Europe has found its 2023 Ryder Cup captain! The tournament veteran and English national Luke Donald will replace the Swedish player and lead the European players to try and win their 15th title!
According to the latest announcement from Team Europe officials, the 44-year-old will lead the team in the event which will be held at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome in 2023. Notably, Donald would be the first English golfer to become the captain of Team Europe since Sir Nick Faldo in 2008.

“If I got this captaincy, I would live up to my word and see it through,” Donald had said before Team Europe revealed him as the captain. “Let me put it that way,” he added. “I wouldn’t be doing a Henrik.”
Earlier, Team Europe chose Henrik Stenson as their captain for the team event in 2023. However, the Tour decided to drop him from his position after the Swedish golfer signed with LIV Golf to play in its Invitational Series, where he won his debut event.

As of writing this article, the Ryder Cup Europe Twitter page shared the news to make Donald the new captain only an hour ago. Yet, the post has received almost 3k likes and 200 retweets, which shows how many have accepted Luke Donald as their new captain.

Turned professional in 1999, Stenson has won more than 22 titles worldwide. He has also represented Team Europe five times throughout his career, in which his Team won three times.
Luke Donald, on the other hand, has been part of the Ryder Cup four times since he turned professional in 2001. Notably, Team Europe has won all the times he has attended the prestigious event. Furthermore, the former world no. 1 has served as vice-captain in two Ryder Cup competitions.
