Bryson DeChambeau may be popular in the world of golf for being strong physically. But back in 2016, DeChambeau depicted his fortitude when he participated in the Masters despite his father undergoing surgery. Moreover, thanks to Nick Watney’s uncle, Jon DeChambeau went on to witness his son’s maiden Major win. During the 2016 Masters, DeChambeau finished at his personal best rank at the Augusta National to date. The then 22-year-old was still an amateur golfer at the time. Despite his father’s ongoing dialysis, the Scientist did not disappoint.

Jon DeChambeau lost both of his kidneys back in 2016. With desperately in need of a donor, a long-time friend came in as a guardian angel for the DeChambeau family. It was none other than Mick Watney.

Father of Bryson DeChambeau gets a kidney donor

Mike Watney was merely attempting to pay it forward by helping out a person he has known for a long time. The uncle of professional golfer Nick Watney and a retired Fresno State golf coach, got to know about Jon DeChambeau requiring a new kidney. So he offered his services as a donor.

Jon DeChambeau’s predicament was getting worse at the age of 56. He received his diabetes diagnosis 31 years earlier, underwent a double-bypass procedure in 2014, and underwent many surgeries to amputate his right toes over the previous year. In 2014, his kidneys stopped working.

While speaking about the life-saving gesture from Watney, Jon DeChambeau said, “Mike felt empowered enough to help me. He’s helped save my life, and prolong my life for a good number of years.” Even Bryson DeChambeau’s mother, Jan was amazed at Mike Watney. She said, “It was jaw dropping to me. I couldn’t believe it when Jon told me and I got the same reaction from Bryson. What an awesome thing to do.”

Finally the hero of the DeChambeau family, Watney spoke about his kind gesture. He predicted Bryson DeChambeau’s upcoming success on the professional circuit. Warner said, “With Bryson playing so well and about to turn pro, I knew that Jon was going to start an exciting new part of his life. I feel like people should help people whenever they can.”

A triple bogey on the 18th hole dropped Bryson four strokes down going into the weekend. To accompany his son on Sunday, Jon decided to start dialysis again on Saturday. The Scientist shot 72 in his final game before becoming a pro, placing T-21. Four years later, a proud Jon DeChambeau got to witness his son raise his first Major trophy after Bryson claimed the 2020 US Open, all thanks to Mick Watney.
