Thomas’ Childhood

Justin’s father was a professional golfer, and growing up, it was all he wanted to do. As a child, golf was his favorite sport, and he’d spend most of his time playing it. He would also often visit the golf courses his father played at. As a child, Thomas had seen many courses with a lot of history, but when he was just 6, he played at a course where they held major championships, the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

It was his 6th birthday, and Thomas was excited to head to his favorite par-3 course. “It was my favorite because it was the only course where I could hit the ball far enough to reach the green on just about every hole,” he said. Golf and cake just about made it his perfect day.

On his way to the course, his parents stopped the car outside Valhalla, and his dad asked him if he wanted to play there instead. Justin, who knew elite golf courses didn’t allow children to play there, said, “Yeah … of course that would be cool.” And his dad told him to get his clubs and that they’d play there for the day.

Six-year-old Justin Thomas stood flabbergasted. “I couldn’t even grasp what he was saying. I didn’t catch on at all. Me, at six years old, playing Valhalla? I couldn’t even fathom it,” he stated. He doesn’t remember how he played that day or how many greens he hit. But that day and that experience were unforgettable.
