The golfing community has enough controversies to go around without having to tailor more due to misinterpretation of comments. With Wyndham Clark’s maiden victory came a lot of speculation that most pro golfers may not be thrilled about it. It is a competitive world, and it’s not a reach to assume every player wanted the title for themselves.

With the Travelers Championship underway, a wayward but friendly comment made by Justin Thomas went viral purely due to misconception. The targeted golfer, Wyndham Clark was anything but offended and agreed that it was a fun jab. Finally, Clark’s friend and social media influencer Paige Spiranac, had to jump to Justin’s rescue.

Social media influencer Paige Spiranac, is not one to take a back seat when it comes to shutting down spiraling rumors. The former aspiring golfer may have changed course to become an online coach and social media connoisseur, but she understands the stress that accompanies players on the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour quite well.

A little context: Justin Thomas, forgetting that he had a hot mic, joked, “Guy wins one f—ing US Open and I have to mark it from 80 yards.” Thomas did mark the ball as per Clark’s request and the trio which also included Max Homa, continued their stellar performance.

The friendly comment made on the course was propagated across social media as defamation. A perplexed Justin Thomas explained in a tweet to his fans and everyone else who misinterpreted his words, that it was just friends having fun with each other. Wyndham Clark also jumped in on the fun with connotations of support, “They honestly should be mad, I had you mark it and hit it to 30 feet.” Clark added laughing emojis to get his point across but once again it was misconstrued.

Therefore, when JT was being shed in a negative light, Spiranac jumped to his rescue. Anyone who knows the golf diva is aware that she has an influence both in and outside the golfing community. She uses that superpower with care and supports what’s right and speaks openly against what’s wrong. In this case, she knows that Thomas definitely wasn’t wrong but the media wanted him to be the villain in Clark’s story.

When Justin shared his explanation with his fans and those of the maiden winners’ on his Twitter, Paige encouraged him.

Even though most of the golfing fans took the remark in the spirit it was meant, some remain unfazed in their rage. Spiranac and several other pro-golfers, former golfers, and supporters of the community, spoke against the rumors stating that people don’t understand their jovial lingo. Finally, Spiranac seems to have had enough and said, “Keep the trash talk coming.” She supported both Justin and Wyndham’s blossoming friendship with her remark, “So many people like seeing you guys have fun out there.”

Paige’s comment was retweeted by several supporters of the sport. Her fans also rightfully pointed out the media’s evil intent in this context.

Amid a spell-binding second round of the Travelers Championship, Thomas could use the reprieve that Paige’s intervention has the potential to provide. He needs his head in the game, not on speculations about his intentions in the media.

Paige Spiranac and Wyndham Clark were golfing buddies

The Maxim cover girl and Clark were recently receiving a lot of attention from the media spurring rumors about the two of them dating. Spiranac shut it down stating that she grew up playing golf alongside Wyndham Clark for years as a junior golfer. They shared a passion for the sport and an inevitable friendship since the winner of the US Open was only 13 years old.

Given Spiranac’s outspoken nature and an affinity to stand up for what is right, it is hardly conjecture that she would defend her friend if the remark was defaming Clark’s reputation in any way. Both the US Open winner and the golfer-turned-influencer have defended Thomas’s words as simple playfulness among cohorts.

It is safe to say that no matter how much the matter is blown out of proportion, Clark and Spiranac are doing their best to show support for Justin. Now that the founder of OnlyPaige is on his side, hopefully, the world of golf will focus more on the game than on Thomas and his momentary slip of the tongue on an open mic.
