Bryson DeChambeau was over the top and extremely confident after winning the 2020 US Open. He must be because he claimed that he is looking at Augusta National as a par 67 rather than its usual 72 because he could reach all the par 5s in two. As per him, this was not him being “big-headed” as he trusted his capabilities. Augusta National gives trouble to every golfer, and troubled DeChambeau as well! Well, obviously!

The golfer not only shot double bogeys but also carded a triple bogey that year and finished at a lackluster T34! It is safe to say that ever since then, he has been working hard to make Augusta a par-67 course for him, but hasn’t been able to! How could this year be different? Right! A glimpse of his Augusta bad luck was on display during the lighthearted Par-3 Contest on Wednesday!

Bryson DeChambeau hits the ball into the water at the Par-3 Contest

The slam-dunk hole-in-one is a rather rare shot, earning golfers only an eagle because the ball directly drops into the cup without touching the green. This makes it a rather impossible one, too. But, given DeChambeau’s reputation, he just had to. On the par-3 8th hole, he went on to hit the first shot into the water.

But for him, the slam dunk attempt at the Par-3 contest of the Augusta National only earned him a par on the scorecard.  He was penalized a stroke for reattempting the shot. After directing the first ball into the water, he managed to hit the perfect shot in his second attempt (and third official one) and garnered a cheer from everyone around in unison.

Well, this was just the second ace (if he is counting it as one) in his entire career after he hit the first in the final round of the 2019 Masters. He posted the video and wrote on his X account, “If only I hadn’t hit the first one in the water.” Funnily enough, LIV Golf reshared the post and commented, “That feeling when you make a hole-in-one on your second ball in the Par-3 contest at Augusta…” 

This was just a mini-trailer of all the mishaps in shots that he has followed throughout the years. There is truly a reason as to why he is regarded as the kind of mishap at the Augusta! His run at the Masters also solidifies this fact further.

Bryson DeChambeau’s Masters mishaps throughout the years

DeChambeau debuted in the Masters in 2016 and earned his best finish so far, which was T21 that year itself. In 2019, he carded a double bogey on the 10th hole in the 2nd round, followed by two consecutive double bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes in the final round. He tied for the 29th position that year. 2020 turned out to be the worst of all years. He shot a double bogey on the 13th hole in the first round, followed by a triple bogey on the third hole in the second round, and ended with a double bogey in the final round on the fifth hole. The golfer bagged the T-34 spot on the leaderboard that year.

In 2021, he dragged himself all the more close to 50, tying for the 46 position. He scored a double bogey on the fourth hole in the first round, followed by a double bogey on the fourth and twelfth holes in the third round. On the 15th hole, another mishap! He ended up missing the cuts the following two years, 2022 and 2023, carding a total of five bogeys cumulatively in both years.

Well, it looks like Augusta National does not forget golfers taking it lightly and has meticulously stood up to its reputation. How things turn out this year for DeChambeau remains to be seen!
