Meet the Special Caddie on John Daly’s Bag for the 150th Open Championship

In his 30+ years of career, John Daly has never failed to surprise the golf world. He astonished everyone with his rookie win at the 1991 PGA Championship as the 9th alternate of the field. His long drives are always a pleasure to watch as well. This week, at the 150th Open Championship, the golfer has created a surprise for the British audience, and the golfer is nothing but proud of it! 

“How important is a caddy this week?” Soon after the representative of the Open Championship asked him the question, Daly‘s face lit up. He quickly answered, “I got my son. It’s the greatest.” He added, “To have him on the bag is just so special. You don’t know how many more I’m going to get out here.”

That’s right! The 56-year-old has chosen his son, John Patrick Daly, to carry his bag at the home of golf. The R&A coverage of the Celebration of Champions led the golfer to reveal his caddie of the week. Notably, Peter Van Der Riet caddies for the two-time major winner. 

His son wants him to win another Open title

While his father was proud to have him carry his bag, the son expressed his happiness to be part of the course since it’s the home of golf. 

“Yeah, I mean, I see it again.” Little John revealed his wish to see his father another Open when the reporter mentioned the history Daly has created at St. Andrews.

Daly won the Open Championship title at St. Andrews in 1995. He won it at the home of golf after battling Costantino Rocco in the intense play-off in the final round. With his victory, Daly became only the fourth post-war American to win two majors before turning 30. 

John Daly wants his son to take over his position

“I wish they’d give my spot to him, let him play,” Daly said in the interview. “And I’ll hire him a caddie.”

Notably, Little John teamed up with his father to win the 2021 PNC Championship with an event-record score of 27-under par. Furthermore, he plays collegiate golf for the University of Arkansas.

He also ranked in the top 10 seven times on the American Junior Golf Association from September 2020 to July 2021. This includes a victory at the Sung Hyun Park Junior Championship and T2 at the AJGA Junior Championship.
